Masinagudi, a gateway to the raw and unspoiled nature, is a popular holiday destination in South India. It is located in Tamil Nadu and popular for being the home to Masinagudi Wildlife Reserve, which is one of the five different ranges of the rather larger Mudumalai Wild Life Reserve. The place is perfect for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers and apparently receives a continuous flow of tourists year long. It is a part of the Nilgiri Hills and a place with varied forests covered landscapes. The place is basically a tourist town with almost complete dependence on eco-tourism for its economy.
The region is a protected area, home to a many endangered and vulnerable species of animals that include: Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Indian Elephant, and gaur. The park has also been declared as a Tiger Reserve in a endeavour to protect the declining number of tigers in India. Apart from being home of the Indian white-rumped vulture and long-billed vulture (the critically endangered bird species), the park also houses more than 266 species of birds.
The protected park falls between the rather popular Bandipur National Park and Mudumalai National Park. It is a perfect getaway for trekkers and holidaymakers. Trekking, bird watching, and nature walk are the most popular activities amongst the tourists. Jungle Safari are also organized on daily basis. However, tourists generally pick Bandipur National Park over Masinagudi for the purpose of spotting a tiger. It is so because Bandipur National Park has higher concentration of tigers. Apart from that, Elephant Safari and feeding elephants is a major attraction-puller. Another major reason for the place receiving good tourist traffic is its close proximity to other popular tourist destinations of South India. It is about 67 k.m. away from Ooty and 90 k.m. from Mysore. Plus, the geographic location of the tourist destination, which is on the confluence of Karnataka and Kerala also makes the national park a perfect getaway for the locals of neighboring states.
Swamps, grasslands, evergreen forests, and colorful jungle flowers define the wildlife sanctuary. Amongst the prime attractions of the park, some include: deer, panther, hyena, gaur, chital, flying squirrel, elephants, leopard, civets, macaques, sloth bear, etc.
There are cottages provided by the forest department. The number of Masinagudi hotels is quite limited. However, a stay at the hotels is satisfactory. Most of forest department cottages offer first-come, first-served lodgings.
There is no particular season for touring Masinagudi and the tourist place can be visited anytime in a year. To name some of the significant tourist spots that simply cannot be missed include: Chief Minister’s Watchtower, Ombetta Lake, Kargudi viewpoint, Mandradiar Road, Bombax Road, Circular Road, Pykara Lake, Moyar River, and Kallatty falls.
Coimbatore houses the nearest airport, and the nearest railway station is in Ooty. There are number of buses and taxis travelling to these two cities from the Masinagudi main market. Besides, some good budget hotels in Masinagudi also offer transportation services to their guests.
