Natural attractions near Mysore Palace

Spread the love

Whenever I hear the name Mysore, what flashes in my mind is an image of a lot of grandeur, history, culture, and past. Mysore was the capital of the Wodeyar dynasty and it was also a prominent city during the times of the British who gave a lot of importance to the princely state of Mysore and hence the city has affiliations to the colonial past. When I think of post colonial or rather modern Mysore the image that comes into my mind is that of development and progress which has left a huge mark onto the city because of the rampant growth of the information and technology industry. But Mysore is more than just the Mysore palace or the IT hub. It has a very pleasing natural side to it as well which is generally not given much importance. There are a lot of other attractions near Mysore Palace which are also responsible in giving Mysore its feel.

Let us try to get to know a little more about the natural or rather the environmental attractions nearMysore palace which are very beautiful but are hardly much talked about.

  • Mysore Zoo: This is perhaps amongst the oldest zoos in Asia. It was built during the reign of the Maharaja of the Wodeyar dynasty and at that time the entire concept of a zoo was not a very commonplace thing. Today, after around a hundred and fifty years it still continues to be pretty well maintained and hence definitely deserves a mention when it comes to the attractions near Mysore Palace.
  • Karanji Lake: This is a very famous lake which is situated within the center of the Mysore city and hence is one of the closest natural attractions near Mysore palace. This lake is maintained by the Mysore Zoo authority and it spreads over a complete area of around 90 hectares. There was a point in time when a lot of sewage water was spoiling the purity and the beauty of the lake but there was immediate restoration work that was undertaken and the lake was brought back to its former purity. Within the lake premises are a butterfly park and also a walk in aviary. This walk in aviary is the biggest walk in aviary in the country. The lake gets a lot of migratory birds in summer specially herons and egrets and is a beautiful sight altogether. The aviary has artificial waterfalls for the birds and a large number of peacocks, hornbills and other species call it their home. The butterfly park is home to around 45 types of butterflies and is built on one of the islands on the Karanji Lake.
  • The Regional museum of natural history: This is another one of the exciting attractions near Mysore palace because it has specimens of flora and fauna from all over South India and is used as a great place to create awareness about the environment and its issues. It was inaugurated in May, 1995 and is a pretty well visited place.
