Visitors to Sri Lanka will be spoilt for choice when selecting ideal travel in destinations. The entire island is a plethora of different climes and landscapes. The stunning beaches and mist mountain, verdant flora and fauna coupled with architectural masterpieces of ancient times will simply provide breathtaking vistas.

As the business capital of the country, Colombo is an ideal city to explore and understand how Colombians truly live. It is a modern metropolis full of luxurious hotels, restaurants serving epicurean fares, shopping of every form and al fresco cafes. There are many bustling streets in Colombo that offer interesting excursions to experience the intermingling of the old historical colonial architecture of the city and the newer attractions. Galle Face Green, a seaside promenade is an interesting venue to watch the sunset, fly a kite or an informal game of cricket. Another destination that visitors should not miss travelling to is the location known as the cultural triangle. Many UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in this area. Among them is the world famous Sigiriya Lion Rock fortress. According to local history, the Sigiriya ruins are among the most unique ancient sites in the country and believed to be the remains of King Kasyapa’s 5th-century fortress. Climbing the rock, stunning vistas of Sri Lankan scenery can be witnessed. Also popular as a site for pilgrimage, there are inspiring 1500-year old painted frescoes on some rocks.

Other travelling destinations when in Sri Lanka which amplify the country’s rich heritage and culture include the exquisite Dambulla Temple Caves, a giant 12th-century stone sculpture of Buddha seen also in the cultural triangle, at Polonnaruwa and other historic ruins in Anuradhapura. The central hill city of Kandy also offers panoramas of this era and is home to the revered Temple of the Tooth, which houses a sacred relic in well-guarded casket.

Kandy requires special mention as a city that needs exploring for visitors to experience the country’s magnificent past. The Esala Perahera festival, Sri Lanka’s greatest annual spectacle is celebrated and witnessed by Sri Lankans and overseas visitors alike with the parade of beautifully dressed elephants and dancers.

Nuwara Eliya, home to Sri Lanka’s misty mountains and lush plantations is another travelling destination not to be missed. The cool hill country offers verdant tea plantations and home to quaint Little England like cottages. Nature is at its best in this area and is also home to several impressive flora and fauna. This can be experienced with a visit to the impressive Hakgala Botanical Gardens. Nuwara Eliya is also home to the country’s best golf course and has earned accolades from players of the game world over.

Among Sri Lanka’s popular travelling attractions is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Kegalle. Home to abandon or orphaned wild young elephants including babies, visitors will be delighted to watch these magnificent pachyderms fed, bathed and cared for at this unique sanctuary.

Sri Lanka’s many stunning beaches are destinations which should not to be missed when in the country. Miles of sunny beaches and crystal blue waters are the perfect venue to relax and enjoy a blissful vacation.
