Once you think you’ve tried it all, Shanghai comes up with something new. Here are some of the lesser known parts of Shanghai to explore if you are looking for something a little off the beaten path:
Peculiar Museums
If you are looking for something a little different, I can almost guarantee you will find a museum in Shanghai unlike anything you’ve ever been to. The city has everything from museums showcasing typewriters, music boxes, comics and animation, to a tiny chopstick museum. Who knew there could be so many choices?
Shanghai Beach Yoga
When one thinks of Shanghai, beach yoga almost never comes to mind. However, in such a vibrant, busy city, beach yoga may be the perfect cure for city stress. The beach was installed as a government project in The Bund. The beach has become the perfect getaway to read a book, soak up some sun, and, last but not least, enjoy some yoga. (I’m waiting for the city to bring in snow next).
Soy Sauce Tours
Soy sauce is not only a staple in Shanghai, but pretty much the entire world. If you have gone through life without trying this flavorful sauce, then chances are you have been living under a rock. Shanghai has soy sauce factories that go back 130 years. So if you are done with the typical walking city tours, and want something a little different, then exploring the Shanghai soy sauce factories may be for you. French Concession
This is a part of Shanghai that was once for the French. Although, the French are not there anymore, it still holds a Parisian vibe with its European houses, cafes and shops. This very unique neighborhood in Shanghai almost seems out of place. But, then again, does anything in Shanghai completely make sense? It’s the random neighborhoods like this that help make Shanghai a city like no other.

Shanghai is known for being a little different, and there is no better place to find that strange part of Shanghai than its bars. You can find anything from a bar with an upside down room to a pirate themed rum bar. Aside from the many crazy themed bars, Shanghai also has its fair share of hidden bars throughout the city that can only be found by those who know where to look. However, thankfully if you use a VPN on your phone, and download a few Shanghai specific apps, you will be a master at finding all of the hidden bars and secrets of Shanghai.
Hotel Peepshow
You don’t even need to leave the hotel to experience the strange and weird of Shanghai. In the Waterhouse hotel at South Bund you will find peepholes in each room. That’s right! Peepholes! Anyone can choose to check out other hotel guests as they walk down the hallways. Thankfully, there is an option to close up your peephole for those who prefer their privacy. But, you know what they say, when in Shanghai.
There truly is no other city like Shanghai. It is strange, weird, crazy and beautiful all at the same time. I don’t know how anyone could ever find themselves bored in Shanghai. But, if you do, it’s probably because you’re looking in all the wrong places. There are hidden gems all throughout Shanghai, so start looking.
